One of the things we love most about home education is the wonderfully strange intellectual journeys we end up taking. With this set of seven eclectic pre-loved books, you're in for an adventure!
Each set contains one book that focuses on each of the seven key learning areas in the Australian curriculum (excluding languages): Technologies, Science, Health & PE, The Arts, English, Mathematics, and HASS (Humanities).
In each book, you'll find a small card with notes about which other learning areas are also covered, and a few suggested activities. Wherever possible, the suggested activities span multiple age groups.
Please note the books in the photographs are just examples. The books you receive will very likely be different. We carefully source all of our educational books to ensure they are still useful learning tools (even if some of the covers might be a bit daggy!).
What age range are the two options for?
We haven't included a specific age range, because it depends so much on the kids involved!
Straightforward Books - Have more illustrations, may be shorter, have simpler language. May work for many primary-aged children.
Complex Books - Have fewer (or sometimes no) illustrations, may be longer, may include more complex language. May work for many secondary-aged kids and teens.
What should I do if one of the books I receive is too old / too young / not relevant to my child's interests?
One of the things we've learned since starting our home education journey is to let go of a lot of arbitrary rules about what kids of a certain age "should" like, and instead embrace flexibility and creativity. So my recommendation would be to think outside the box.
Here are three examples of what this might look like:
You receive a book on picture framing for 'Technologies'. Your child has no interest in wood work, but they love writing. You can talk about how using reference images and understanding the properties of materials can be very useful when writing a description of something in a story. Find a picture frame that interests them in the book, read about the materials and techniques used to make it, and then use this as a creative writing starting point. Perhaps the picture frame is a portal to another world. Maybe a ghost appears in it on the full moon. Maybe it was created by a grandparent for a grandchild. So many possibilities (while still covering technologies by learning about materials and their properties)!
Your older, more advanced primary-age child receives a picture book for 'The Arts'. They are not as interested in picture books because they believe them to be for 'little kids'. You could ask them to make a version of the story for older kids - Will the art style need to change? What materials should they use? Do the characters need to be redesigned? Has the author made any books for older kids or adults? How about the illustrator?
You receive an in-depth chapter non-fiction book for 'Mathematics'. Your older child sees themselves as someone who is not good at mathematics and believes they wouldn't understand the book. Instead, you might like to flip through and find examples or ideas that might interest them, and source amusing YouTube videos that cover the same concepts. Then, if they like one of them, you could go into more depth using that chapter in the book.
If the book is a really poor fit, consider passing it on to a family member or friend, or maybe even seeing if you can trade them for a book that is more your speed. This book bundle - like learning as a whole - is meant to be fun, so don't feel obliged to stick with a book that isn't working for you.
Please note:
As these are all second-hand books, there will be some wear and tear. All are complete and clean.
Older books may occasionally include some outdated language or concepts. We would encourage you to use these as learning opportunities to explain social change in an age-appropriate way. If you are part of a minority group and wish to access these bundles without having to perform this emotional labor as it relates to your identity, please reach out and we will do our best to put together a bundle for your children that is appropriate for them.
