Activities that Teach Patterns and Algebra

Working Mathematically is a series of workbooks with carefully sequenced, guided activities that cover all the outcomes of a lower secondary curriculum. Through working mathematically, students build an understanding of crucial mathematical concepts and relationships.

They also come to appreciate the significance of mathematics to other learning areas and its application to everyday life.

The authors:

Heather McMaster (BScAgr, MSc, PhD, DipEd) has a background in applied research and teaching within the agricultural and insurance industries. She has taught maths, science and religious education in government and independent schools.

Michael Mitchelmore (MA, PhD, CertEd) is Associate Professor and Director of the Centre of Research in Mathematics and Science Education at Macquarie University, Sydney. He has taught mathematics and mathematics education all over the world. He has a special interest in students' learning of mathematical concepts through real-life contexts.
